The Birmingham Big Band was formed by local musician John Ruddick in response to a need for the Midland's top musicians to meet during the daytime and play some adventurous and challenging big band music not usually performed in the normal course of their evening gigs. Composers include Bob Florence, Frank Mantooth, Sammy Nestico, and Rob McConnell.
The band consists of experienced professional and semi-professional players with a wealth of appearances on radio and TV, many of whom have backed some of the world’s top stars. These included Mel Torme, Frankie Laine, Peggie Lee, the Drifters, Shirley Bassey and Bruce Forsythe. The musicians enjoy a weekly “get-together” and the challenge of some great big band music. Some direct their own bands as well.
In 2018 the band has again toured Holland and Germany to much acclaim (see Events).
We undertake quarterly concerts often with guest vocalists and the programmes have a mix of old favourites and exciting modern charts allowing the soloists to shine. These usually take place at Moseley All Services Club, 91 Church Road, Moseley, Birmingham.
